IIM Calcutta, or Joka as it is fondly called is the oldest IIM to be set up and regarded as the finest Bschool for Finance in the country. As a member of the Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS), IIM Calcutta also offers the CEMS Masters in International Management degree.
Eligibility Criteria - A candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disability (PWD) categories].
Expected Cutoff for Conversion- For the dreaded GEM category, cutoff was 99.51 for the 2015-17 batch and 99.49 for the 2016-18 batch. IIM-C offers lower weightage to academics than IIM A/B and 80%+ in 10th and 12th will land you full marks in past academic performance.
Fees- The fee for the flagship PGDM Course is Rs 19 lakh.
The IIM Calcutta campus’s main academic block has four lecture halls and several classrooms. The new academic block was opened in 2000 to accommodate growing number of students. Every classrooms and lecture halls are air conditioned and have advanced audio-visual and multimedia features. A new academic block was further established and inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2011. IIM-C has 7(!) lakes on campus and probably the best on campus auditorium in the country. It's library is also one of the biggest bschool libraries in Asia.
Faculty - Currently there are 23 full time faculties at IIM-C. Past and present faculty at IIM Calcutta include many prominent scholars such as historians Barun De and Rajat Kanta Ray, economists Paul Samuelson and Deepak Nayyar, statistician Rahul Mukerjee, Jagdish Sheth, and Warren Bennis. Yoginder K Alagh, a former union minister in the Government of India, previously taught Economics at IIM-C. Ashok Mitra, a marxist economist who was a professor at IIM-C later became the Finance Minister of the state of West Bengals
Clubs at IIM-C - There are a number of student-run clubs and societies at the campus. Centre of Entrepreneurship and Innovation provides support for new business ventures. There is Operations Club for the students with interest towards Operations and Supply Chain Management. Consulting Club offers its members the opportunity to have hands-on experience in consulting while still at the campus studying towards the degree. Finance and Investment Club, or popularly known as the Fin Club enables students to collaborate with corporate and academia from the Finance sector in order to improve their analytical and quantitative skills. INCA focuses to social and community work. OutTh!nk focuses on puzzles and brain teasers. And the list goes on.
EnI- Entrepreneurship and Innovation Cell The EnI Cell nurtures entrepreneurial talent in the IIMB Community. It works in co-ordination with NSRCEL and has co-hosted events such as a ‘Sharktank’ to nudge students into exploring their entrepreneurial dreams.
Life at IIM-C IIM-C is said to be the most chilled out amongst the Top Bschools of the country. It is also said to treat its students like adults and allow them far more freedom than other B-schools. In fact you can select any subject you like in the second year and there is a bidding system for selection, where each student starts with equal credit points!
Intaglio- It is the annual international Business school summit hosted by Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.It serves as a platform facilitating the interaction of eminent personalities from the industry, academia, media and government, holding conferences, workshops and seminars by experts in different fields on a wide range of topics.Intaglio also includes a large number of competitive and non-competitive events for B-school students, which attract participation from world-renowned institutions from around the world.
Carpe Diem-It is the annual cultural fest organised by the students of IIM Calcutta. It's usually held over a 3-day weekend in February, and attracts participation from colleges and schools across India. It is the largest B-School Cultural Fest in Eastern India.
Lattice- It is the annual business symposium organized by the PGPEX students of IIM Calcutta. It is a platform that facilitates interaction of students of IIM Calcutta with leaders of Indian society and industry. Lattice is usually held in October.
Out of the 460+ summer internship offers made on campus, Consulting sector had the highest share of 24 %. Major recruiters in consulting were A.T. Kearney, Bain & Co., Boston Consulting Group, Mckinsey & Co. and Accenture Strategy, the latter being the largest recruiter in the consulting domain.
Finance continued to be one of the most sought after domains among students with 23% of the batch securing internships in the BFSI sector. The sector witnessed a surge in the number of banking sector firms and private recruiters participating in the placement process with Goldman Sachs being the top recruiter in the category.
FMCG and Consumer Product firms from the likes of HUL, P&G, ITC, L’oreal, J&J etc. reaffirmed their faith in the students of IIM Calcutta by hiring in large numbers. Along with them Food & Beverages companies like PepsiCo., Coca Cola, Mondelez, Nestle hired 19% of the batch in Sales & Marketing roles.
14% of the batch was hired for leadership roles in conglomerates like Tata Administrative Services, Aditya Birla Group, Mahindra & Mahindra and others. Aditya Birla Group stayed on top as the largest & most consistent recruiter in this domain with the highest number of offers.
E-commerce witnessed loss of some recruiters, most of them being start-ups. This loss of roles was mostly made up by the increase in Finance & Leadership roles on the campus.
The highest stipend bagged by IIM Calcutta for this summer placement season is INR 4.5 L per month coming from the BFSI sector.
The final placements for the batch of 2017 were wrapped up in 3 days. A total of 474 offers were made to students, including those from international companies. The highest domestic package was Rs 70 lakh per annum, whereas the highest international package amounted to 90,000 Euros (Rs 63 lakh approx) per annum.
The finance sector was among the top recruiters with companies such as Avendus, Edelweiss, Goldman Sachs, and HSBC hiring students.
Consulting sector emerged as the second highest recruiter contributing to 22% of the total offers made. Top recruiters in this sector were Accenture, AT Kearney, Bain, BCG, McKinsey.
General management firms also recruited in big numbers this year and 15% offers were made in this sector by top firms like ABG, CK Birla, TAS etc. Sales and marketing roles contributed to 12% of the total offers, predominantly made by firms like HUL, ITC, P&G, Reckitt Benckiser etc.
Apart from these, e-commerce and IT roles also contributed to 14% of the total offers and companies like Amazon, Wipro etc. hired in big numbers.
IIM Calcutta has a 15,000+ strong alumni network. Over the years, alumni of IIM Calcutta have taken up strategic positions in organisations around the world. IIM-C alumni include prominent entrepreneurs and business executives like Indra Nooyi (Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo), Major Mohommed Ali Shah (Theatre personality and Social activist), Ajit Balakrishnan (Founder, Chairman & CEO of Rediff.com), Srinath Narasimhan (MD and CEO of Tata Teleservices) and P M Murty (MD & CEO of Asian Paints), Ashish Kumar Bansal (MD of Care Electronics). Other notable alumni include academics and scholars such as Ramchandra Guha and Krishna Palepu, and authors like Amish Tripathi and Swati Kaushal, and renowned mountaineer Malli Mastan Babu.
