Remarks by a prominent artiste about the skin colour of another renowned exponent of the classical dance has caused outrage, with cultural institutions and political leaders condemning the comments.

Kalamandalam Satyabhama, who in an interview with a YouTube channel said that skin colour of another artist/performer was that of a “crow” and suggested that he was not “beautiful enough” to be a performer, later told reporters on Thursday that she stood by her comments. He has said that he would explore legal options against her. Both are well-known exponents of the classical dance form.

“His colour is that of a crow. A person who performs the dance should be a (enchanting one). There are attractive men who perform it, but his looks are unbearable,” she said in the interview, referring to the person.

Sri Lanka is close to finalising a debt treatment plan, sources familiar with the negotiations said, pointing to a likely moratorium and a reduced interest rate during the repayment period.

“The discussions are at an advanced stage. A formal agreement on the terms can be expected very soon,” the Colombo-based source told The Hindu on Thursday, after a recent discussion among members of the Official Creditor Committee [OCC].

As many as 17 countries that have extended loans to Sri Lanka formed the Committee last year for ease of debt restructuring negotiations. Meanwhile, Colombo has repeatedly assured the OCC that it would negotiate repayment of Chinese loans on comparable terms.
