Problems Faced in the DILR Section of the CAT Exam

Like every other section of the CAT Exam, you are provided 60 minutes to solve DILR for CAT. Completing all Here we have listed some of the most common problems aspirants face in this section.

  • Not selecting the right DILR Set.
The paper setters of the CAT Exam have mastered the art of creating a good mix of easy and difficult questions. When you go through the past year’s CAT question papers, you will observe that there are always at least 2 doable sets that may take 15-20 minutes to solve. On the other hand, there will always be some sets that might be quite tough to crack and might take 30-40 minutes to solve. The reason for having such a mix of sets is to test the time management skills and selection capabilities of the candidates. As a good manager, you will want first to target the low-hanging fruits in the exam.

To perform well in the exam, you need to master the art of selecting the right set to attempt. You should first attempt the sets that you are familiar with. As in this section, accuracy is more important than the number of attempts.
  • Not being familiar with certain types of sets.
Most of the time, you will observe that you were not able to solve a set even after you knew the basic concept. This is an indicator of the fact that either you do not know the concept well or that you are not well versed in the concept application skills. Practice plays an important role in increasing familiarity with the standard variety of sets.
  • Bad time management.
Bad time management is one of the most common mistakes that candidates make in the DILR Section of the CAT Exam. Sometimes, candidates end up wasting their entire time in solving a single set, without going through the other sets. Sometimes even after putting in time, you may not be able to solve the set correctly. Hence it is suggested to first skim through all sets of DILR Section. One’s time management skills can improve by taking full-length practice tests and mocks.
  • Not reading questions carefully.
Not reading a question carefully might result in a loss of time during the exam. Like, suppose you read a case incorrectly in some DILR Set, due to which you invested 20 minutes to solve a question, that you could have solved in 10 minutes or maybe less than that.

As you know, time is a constraint in the CAT exam. And one do not want to lose out their precious time on silly mistakes. Moreover, one should pay good attention while solving questions involving complex calculations.
