The Joint Entrance Exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for admission into B.Tech, B.Arch, etc. programs of Premier Engineering institutes of the Country. In this article, we will discuss the IIT JEE Preparation Strategy. The Joint Entrance Exam (popularly known as JEE) is conducted in two stages namely JEE Mains & JEE Advanced. The JEE Mains is conducted in two sessions every year and allows a maximum of 6 attempts in 3 consecutive years. The exam is conducted during Jan and April over a 9-day window in the respective months. While JEE Advanced is conducted only once a year (mostly in the month of May).

JEE Mains And Advanced: Eligibility

JEE Main is the first stage of the Exam and it is applicable for admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating through the Central Seat Allocation Board. The top 2.5 lakh students from JEE Mains qualify for the JEE Advanced exam, which is the 2nd stage of the JEE. The students who clear JEE Advanced, get admission into IITs(Indian Institute of Technology).

For admission into NITs or IITs, the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.

When it comes to JEE preparation, there are various aspects one should keep in mind. The Joint Entrance Exam is getting competitive year by year.

IIT JEE Preparation Strategy: Physics

IIT JEE Physics can be broadly divided into 4 Subparts, particularly known as Mechanics, Modern Physics, Electricity and Mechanics and Optics. It’s good to practice visualization when it comes to solving real-life Mechanics problems. You should also understand the derivations and reasoning behind all formulas.
Irrespective of the topics, one can apply the following approach in their preparation:

Step 1: Clearing basics should be the fundamental step of your preparation. One should go through the NCERT books to understand basic concepts.
Step 2: After you have a clear understanding of concepts, you can take up standard material and practice problems from well-known books like HC Verma, and DC Pandey. If you want to go the extra mile, you can also try books like I.E. Irodov and Resnick, and Halliday which have tougher levels of questions.
Step 3: Practicing questions from your DPP(Daily Practice Problems), Coaching Materials.
Step 4: Take a lot of Sectional and full-length mocks, as practising in a time-bound manner helps one in analyzing your stronger and weaker areas, and to work upon it accordingly.
Step 5: Attempt all Past Year Paper questions on the topic to have an in-depth understanding and overall practice.

IIT JEE Preparation Strategy: Chemistry

Chemistry is known to be the make-or-break subject in IIT JEE preparation. Most individuals who are inclined towards Physics or Maths seem to have a certain apprehension when it comes to chemistry. The reason might be the abundance of memorisation and the uncountable number of exceptions, especially in Inorganic Chemistry. However, it’s possible to ace this subject as well, by having different strategies for different sections:

Physical Chemistry:

Stoichiometry: This is the most important chapter of Physical Chemistry. If you understand its concepts then the rest of the preparation in this section will be easier. It will help you gain firm command over the entire Chemistry for JEE. Practice and have a clear understanding of terms such as Mole fraction, Normality, Morality, Molality, etc.
Chemical Bonding: It is a chapter on the concepts of Molecules. Molecules are the smallest units of compound, and their concept can be used in entire organic chemistry. Direct questions are always asked from Dipole moment, Hybridisation and VSEPR theory. You should focus on understanding, how valence electrons get transferred during different types of bonds.
Chemical Equilibrium: It is one of the easiest chapters. Make sure you do read the theory part along with the numerical as sometimes questions are theory-based like from Le Chatelier’s principle (effect of temperature, concentration, and pressure).
Atomic structure: Questions are frequently asked about Quantum numbers, the De Broglie Hypothesis, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle and the Spectrum of a Hydrogen atom. This chapter is considered to be very logical. According to previous trends, the difficulty level of the questions asked from this topic is easy to moderate. One should make sure to practice the standard questions.
Chemical kinetics: In Chemical Kinetics one should pay special attention to 1st order reactions. It is one of the easy chapters, as questions asked in JEE form these topics are also not difficult.
Thermodynamics: This is considered to be a tricky chapter. One can understand the first part if they have studied it in physics. Most of the concepts take some time to be completely understood. Having your concepts clear, will help you in solving numerical like entropy calculations.
Electrochemistry: Nernst equation, its relation and its various applications like Electrochemical series, E.M.F of Galvanic cells, Faraday’s laws of electrolysis, Electrolytic conductance, Kohlrausch’s law are some of its important units. These units are easy if you understand the Nernst equation well.
Surface Chemistry: The chapter demands being thorough with the chapter from the NCERT Book. As fact-based questions can be asked from this topic.

For numerical questions, you must revise shortcut formulas which would enable you to derive the answers quickly, and would eventually save time. You should memorize all the formulas of the Mole concept, Chemical kinetics, Equilibrium, and Electrochemistry. Solving lots of problems on these topics makes your numerical approach strong.

Inorganic Chemistry:

NCERT is said to be the key for this part of Chemistry. Many JEE aspirants leave this part for the last 2-3 months. One should avoid making this mistake. The syllabus is huge and to perform well, one needs to study this from the beginning and revise it regularly.

Coordination compounds: Stereoisomerism of coordination compounds, Werner Theory, Geometry and shapes of Tetrahedral and Octahedral complexes, Crystal field theory and its application should be key focus areas in this chapter.
Metallurgy and ores: Standard questions are mainly asked from NCERT. Important topics in this chapter are: Carbon reduction method (tin and iron), Self-reduction method ( lead and copper), Electrolytic reduction method (aluminium and magnesium), and Cyanide process ( gold and silver).
P block: This is one of the most important chapters. 3-4 questions are guaranteed from this chapter. Reading from NCERT is recommended.

In Inorganic chemistry, Exceptions are very important because many questions in JEE Main and JEE Advanced are based on these exceptions only.

Organic Chemistry:

Organic chemistry is the most interesting part of IIT JEE Chemistry. If you understand what’s happening underneath the hood of the reactions (i.e. the mechanism) then you may score very well in this section. Always remember that a nucleophile attacks an electrophile. Don’t try to learn reactions (especially for organic chemistry). Other than this, try to understand the complete mechanism behind it.

A large portion of organic chemistry consists of named reactions and you are expected to know these reactions along with the complete mechanisms. Standard reactions and named reactions are the most important. Direct questions are always asked on this topic. There is a very high probability of occurrence of at least one question from each Aldol condensation and Cannizzaro’s reaction. Try to understand the mechanism of organic chemistry rather than just mugging it up.

Overall, JEE Chemistry can boost your rank and will also save you time during exams as you can complete it in less than 1 hour if you have studied. This is a very high-scoring subject so study it well and do memorize the stuff wherever needed.

IIT JEE Preparation Strategy: Mathematics

This Section demands Rigorous practice and Clarity of Concepts. Being familiar with Formulae derivations can make things easier for you. The Exam authority of JEE tends to make this section a mix of tough and tricky questions, however, it is still possible to score well if your preparation strategy is right. Let’s discuss it topic-wise:

Algebra: (Recommended Book: Hall and Knight)
No other topic can come close to Algebra in the simplicity and ability to shell out easily obtainable marks in the JEE Examination. What is required from the applicants is to have high computational speed and clarity about their basic concepts. Algebra is also considered as one of the most interesting topics and thus clarity of concepts plus good calculation speed is enough to score well from the questions of this topic.

Calculus: (Recommended Book: Thomas and Finney)
It is among the largest sections of modern mathematics and is considered one of the key topics for IIT JEE preparation, Calculus has two main sections. Differential and Integral Calculus, are associated with the fundamental theory of calculus. It deals with studying operations and applying them to equation solving. Problems that have their base in theory as well as problems that have their base in application show equal appearance in the JEE Maths section.

Coordinate Geometry: (Recommended Book: SL Loney)
One other necessary constituent of the math section in JEE Exams is coordinate geometry.
