A court in a country recently revoked biosafety permits for commercial propagation of genetically modified golden rice and Bt eggplant. The decision is circulating in the international media, as proponents of GM crops have claimed the decision may have disastrous consequences for children with vitamin deficiency, ignoring the safety violations noted by the court.
Golden rice, so named because of its rich yellow colour, was genetically engineered to contain higher levels of the micronutrients iron and zinc in the grains while also producing beta-carotene, a precursor to that particular vitamin.
In 2021, the this nation became the first country to approve commercial production of the rice variety. However, non-profit organisations such as Greenpeace and local farmers protested the decision.

Hollywood actor has expressed “shock” and “anger” over hearing the voice for GPT-4o, OpenAI’s latest AI model, which she has said sounds “eerily similar” to her own voice.
In a statement issued this week, she accused OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, of using her voice despite her earlier declining licensing requests from company CEO Sam Altman.
Earlier, a famous news agency took legal action against OpenAI and Microsoft, alleging the unauthorised use of its copyrighted content to train AI models, including ChatGPT.
