In a bid to manage the teeming population of chital in Ross Island, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration recently sought help from the Wildlife Institute of India.
Chital, native to mainland India, were introduced to the tiny island (0.3 sq km small) by the British in the early 20th century. Having no natural predators or competitors, and being good swimmers, chital swiftly spread across the Andamans.
Over the past two decades, studies have examined the seemingly innocuous herbivores’ deleterious impact on the islands’ native flora and fauna — bringing to spotlight the topic of invasive species, and the threat they pose to endemic ecosystems.

The highest-ranking military official to be tried in Europe on April 15 appeared before a court accused of war crimes during his nation’s civil war.
Former brigadier general, 65 who lives in Europe, is accused of “aiding and abetting” war crimes and could get a life jail sentence.
The war between President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and armed opposition groups, including the Islamic State, erupted after the government repressed peaceful pro-democracy protests in 2011.
It has killed more than half a million people, displaced millions, and ravaged in this nation’s economy and infrastructure.
Prosecutor Karolina Wieslander said he had contributed — through “advice and action” — to the Army’s warfare, which “systematically included attacks carried out in violation of the principles of distinction, caution and proportionality.”
