Passage 1
The Supreme Court on Monday is scheduled to pronounce its verdict on petitions challenging the remission granted to 11 convicts in the case of the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of seven of her family members during the Gujarat riots. A Bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan on October 12 last year reserved its verdict after an 11-day hearing on the petitions, including the one filed by Bano. While reserving the judgment, the top court directed the Centre and the Gujarat government to submit by October 16 the original records related to the remission of sentence of the 11 convicts. The apex court came down heavily on the Gujarat government during the hearings and questioned its selective approach.

Passage 2
After posts by several of its deputy ministers attacking India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi triggered a furore, the Maldives Sunday reportedly suspended “all government officials responsible for the comments”, including deputy ministers Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, Maryam Shiuna and Malsha Shareef. Earlier in the day, the country’s government had issued a statement distancing itself from “derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals”. It added that it wouldn’t “hesitate to take action” against those who make such remarks. Saying the opinions expressed on social media were “personal” and didn’t represent the government’s views, the statement added that freedom of expression should be exercised in ways that “do not spread hatred, negativity and hinder close relationships between the Maldives and its international partners”.
