Campus Life at IIM Rohtak
Stretching across 200 acres, the IIM Rohtak campus is located around twenty minutes away from the nearest city, Rohtak. Like all other IIMs, life at IIM Rohtak entails a long list of never-ending assignments, projects, and a whole lot of stress. However, the campus also comes with facilities that provide an opportunity for students to unwind.
One of the most special features of IIM Rohtak is its insta-worthy views. There is nothing for miles to block the enchanting views of the sunsets and sunrises. There are simply no words to describe the beauty of the star-filled night skies. As the sun begins to set, you can find students coming out from their dorms to go out for leisure walks. Mixed in with them would be the errant health-conscious joggers. The campus comes off as a balanced mix of concrete and nature. At the same time, some students prefer to gather at Nescafe – IIM Rohtak’s in-house café. They can be found lounging around, enjoying a cup of coffee with a bowl of Maggi or other delights such as pizza pockets, sandwiches, burgers, pastries, or others.

Four times a day, for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner, students come pouring into their respective messes, looking to fill their hungry stomachs. The Hospitality Committee, along with the administration, releases an updated meal schedule every month after taking suggestions from the entire student body. Since there are students from all over India, you can find a healthy mix of both North Indian and South Indian dishes on every schedule. For dinner, there is always a dessert that comes along. On some days it might be ice cream and on other days, you can find Gajjar Ka Halwa or Coconut Barfi. On special days such as Navaratri and Ramadan, fasting students are also provided with meals to break their fast. To top it all, on Sundays, you get Biriyani – both veg and non-veg – with ice cream for lunch.
The dorm-related issues are also taken care of by the Hospitality Committee. The dorms at IIM Rohtak are fashioned such that there are common courtyards between every couple of dorms. Students can often be seen here ‘recharging’ together with friends after a long exhausting day of classes. Inside the dorms, there are the common rooms – where clubs and committees have their meetings, the washing room – where you can find the washing machine (obviously), and the flats – every flat has three to four rooms with a common area in between. The dorms for the males and females are separate, and the rooms are allotted on sharing basis. Each room will have an attached bathroom with hot water facilities and an air conditioner, along with a table, a bed, a cupboard, and an almirah for each student.
After classes, those who prefer solitude or want to spend their time more productively can be seen at various corners of the library browsing through books or their laptops. The library spans three floors and is very spacious. On some days, you can find groups of students working together on assignments or final projects. The week before the exams, the library witnesses the most footfalls, with students coming in, one after the other to cram for their midterms or end terms. Known for its contribution to research, the IIM Rohtak Library is equipped with books and research materials from every management-related discipline. You can also find fictional and non-fictional novels and magazines, in Hindi and English. Students and faculties are also given access to e-databases where they can browse through online journals, reports, and books, 24/7.
There is the Student Activity Centre, along with tennis courts, football grounds, basketball courts, and badminton courts where the more athletic students go to reenergize themselves. The Student Activity Centre is equipped with indoor courts and a gym. There is also the Sports Committee which organizes inter-batch or inter-section sports events frequently, providing a platform for distraction from the everyday mundane life. It is not just the Sports Committee though. There are also 25 other clubs and committees organizing various events, proving both entertainment and learning experiences.
Talking about learning experiences, while IIM Rohtak encourages peer learning, the faculties can also be approached to solve any queries, both during and after classes. Student-led and faculty-moderated discussions are highly encouraged during sessions. The layouts and designs of the classrooms have been inspired by boardrooms with revolving seats and u-shaped layouts to facilitate peer-to-peer discussions along with peer-to-faculty discussions. Assignments and quizzes depend on the discretion of each faculty. There will be a final project assigned to each course to be submitted at the end of each term.
When life inside the campus begins to get stifling, there are always a few days a week when students are allowed to go out, provided, they return before the curfew. The Dhabhas and food stalls, located a few steps away from the institute’s main gate, serving delicious street-style cuisines are all-time favorites of every Kathor. The Tilyar Lake in Rohtak is another hotspot where students go to clear their minds. While at Rohtak, they also visit the markets, restaurants, theatres, and retail outlets. On Sundays, students looking for more, make the two-hour journey to Delhi in groups.
Back to the campus, a new day follows. The leisure and fun from the day out are left behind and it’s back to the same old routine again. Waking up and rushing to get a bite of breakfast to reach the classroom before the first session at 8:45 a.m. Then comes back-to-back sessions of 75 minutes each with 20-minute breaks in between, before students are finally let out at 1:10 pm. After lunch, students are left to their own devices. Most students, during this period, schedule meetings solo study sessions or with their respective committees or clubs, or study groups.
Often, there are also placement-related activities scheduled during this period. A dedicated team of seniors and juniors from the Placement Committee and the Placement Preparation Committee handles all such activities for the students of the PGP batches. The Internship Committee is its alternative for the IPM batches. Events such as Infusion, Management Summits, G20 Summits, Guest Lectures, and TedX are organized and coordinated by committees such as the Industrial Relations and Interaction Cell, Academic Committee, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Cell, Cultural Committee and other non-domain clubs such as Infusion and TedX. Infusion is the most-awaited event of the year for all Kathors. There are food stalls, sports events, and cultural events with special performances from bands, comedians, and stars. Students from other IIMs and nearby colleges are invited and accommodations are provided. It is the perfect end to the year before the students leave for their summer or final placements.
