All India Institutes of Medical Sciences or AIIMS are public medical universities. AIIMS have national importance under the law. AIIMS Delhi was founded in 1956. It is the first AIIMS to be established in India. There are a total 26 AIIMS in India with more under development. AIIMS Delhi has been in the 1st position in the category of top medical colleges in the last 2 years. The entrance exam accepted at AIIMS Delhi is the INI CET for admission to PG courses.Â
The government is working on constructing 22 new AIIMS. Out of the 22 new AIIMS, AIIMS Awantipora (Kashmir), AIIMS Manethi (Haraya), AIIMS Darbhanga (Bihar), etc are still under development. As a result, 19 AIIMS in India are functional. Out of the 19 operational AIIMS, 7 are ranked by the NIRF in 2024. NIRF ranks AIIMS AIIMS Bhubaneswar at the 15th rank and AIIMS Jodhpur at the 16th rank.

AIIMS Seat Intake
The seat capacity at AIIMS colleges has increased due to new campus construction. More AIIMS are in the development phase which will add new seats to the medical quota in India. AIIMS Bathinda reserves around 100 seats for the MBBS program while AIIMS Madurai, AIIMS Guwahati and AIIMS Bilaspur reserve 50 seats for the MBBS course.
