The NIFT entrance exam is a national-level exam conducted by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Textiles. NIFT Entrance Exam—Eligibility Criteria

For NIFT Undergraduate programs (B.Des & B.FTech):

  1. Age limit: 
  • All applicants must not be more than 24 years old as of 1st August of the admission year.
  • There is a 5-year relaxation for SC/ST/PwD applicants.
  1. Educational Qualification:
  • Applicants must passed 10+2 from a recognized board or equivalent, OR,
  • Applicants must have 3- or 4-year diploma recognized by AICTE or a State Technical Board. 

For NIFT Postgraduate programs (M.Des, M.F.M, & M.FTech):

  1. Age Limit:
  • As per the NIFT entrance exam, there are no restrictions on age limits for PG courses.
  1. Educational Qualification:
  • For M.Des and M.F.M., applicants must hold an undergraduate degree from a recognized university in any field.
  • For M.FTech., applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in B.FTech from NIFT or a B.E/B.Tech from a recognized institute.

Application Process for NIFT Entrance Exam

Step-by-step NIFT application process:

  1. NIFT Online Application: Visit https://www.nift.ac.in and register using a valid email ID and contact number.
  1. Fill the NIFT Application Form: Enter your personal details and academic information, and select your course preference.
  1. Upload Required Documents: Scanned copies of following are required:
  • Passport-size photo
  • Signature
  • Category Certificate (if required)
  • Other required documents
  1. Pay the NIFT Application Fee:
  • General/OBC category – Rs. 3000/-
  • SC/ST/PwD – Rs. 1500/-
  • Fee paid is non-refundable

NIFT Admission Process

Below is the step-by-step admission procedure for NIFT entrance exam:

  1. Entrance Exam: 
  • B.Des/M.Des—Applicants are required to appear for both exams, i.e., the Creative Ability Test (CAT) and the General Ability Test (GAT).
  • B.FTech/M.F.M/M.FTech—Applicants need to appear only for the General Ability Test (GAT).
  1. Shortlisting:
  • Based on the written exams, applicants are called for the further rounds.
  1. The Situation Test and GD/PI Round:
  • For the B.Des program, applicants are required to appear for the Situation Test, i.e., model making and design problem solving.
  • For PG programs, applicants are required to give a Group Discussion (GD) and a Personal Interview (PI).
  1. Final Merit List:
  • The final result of the NIFT entrance exam is prepared by combining scores of each round (weightage may vary for programs).
  1. Counseling and Seat Allotment:
  • Counseling sessions are conducted in both Online and Offline mode.
  • The seat allotment is based on merit rank, choice of program selected, and seat availability for the NIFT course.

For B.Des & M.Des:

  • CAT (Creative Ability Test): It examines the sketching, design thinking, and creativity level of applicants.
  • GAT (General Ability Test): This includes English, quantitative ability, logical reasoning, GK, and current affairs.
  • Situation Test (B.Des only): It comprises 3D model-making and conceptual understanding.

For B.FTech/M.FTech/M.F.M:

  • Only GAT: It focuses mainly on analytical skills, quantitative abilities, communication skills, and general awareness.
  • GD/PI (PG courses): After all the written exams and the situation test, applicants are required to appear for the GP/PI round for final selection.

NIFT Entrance Exam—Preparation Tips

Whether you are preparing for B.Des or M.Des, the NIFT entrance exam is all about blending creativity with conceptual clarity. Here’s a breakdown of how you can prepare for the different sections of the NIFT exam:

  1. CAT (Creative Ability Test)—Let Your Imagination Breathe
  • This test examines how creatively you can think and how effectively you convey an idea while drawing your sketch.
  • Focus on Imagination and Visulaization, i.e., think beyond the obvious.
  • Make proper use of your sketching skills by using clean lines & correct proportions, and label your sketches if needed.
  • Practice storytelling through visuals with just 2-3 frames.

  1. GAT (General Ability Test)—Basics and Brains
  • The GAT tests your general aptitude. It is theory-based exam and applies to all NIFT courses

  • Expert yourself in basic maths—percentage, profit and loss, and time & distance.

  1. The Situation Test (Only for B.Des)—Hands-on Creativity
  • After the written exam, shortlisted B.Des applicants are called for the Situation test. Wherein you will be provided with given material and a theme and will be asked to create a 3-D model.
  • This will examine your innovative mind, how carefully you handle the material, how you will manage your time, and your conceptual clarity.
  • Remember, practice makes a man perfect. Set a timer for at least 30-45 minutes and practice. Using different materials, create a model.
  • Also, after practicing, write a small explanation describing your model; after all clarity matters.
  1. GD/PI round (for PG programs): 
  • For GD, keep your knowledge high on current fashion trends. Practice speaking clearly and confidently, and when in doubt, do not disappear; find the midway.
  • For PI, know and understand your portfolio well. Always be ready to answer—“Why NIFT?” and “Why this course?”
