Importance of Reading For CAT

Reading articles for CAT

To ace the CAT Reading Comprehension section, you need to develop a reading habit. Habitual reading helps you gain focus, comprehend and improve your vocabulary. Reading is the best strategy for CAT hence finding the most relevant reading articles for CAT also becomes important. Subscribe to an editorial, or newspaper; read blogs, online essays, short stories, anything you can find. Go for different genres as the CAT RC passages are also related to different genres, such as, History, Science & Technology, Economics, Philosophy, Literature, etc. Reading also helps with increasing your knowledge in certain domains.

A regular reading habit increases your focus by several folds. Make sure that while you read, you also analyse the tone of the passage and what the author wants to convey. Try summarizing it later for a better understanding.

RC is the backbone of CAT Verbal Aptitude. It is based on a variety of factors. But broadly speaking, the ability to read-comprehend and eliminate the incorrect options usually does the job. Reading depends on not just practice but also familiarity with topics. For instance, one who has read about socialism may find an excerpt from a book by Rosa Luxemborg easy to understand. Similarly, one who is familiar with the science of muscle building may find an RC on amino acid synthesis easy to tackle. So, CAT VARC is not just about reading random stuff on the internet or for that matter going through booker wining novels. It is about reading a diverse range of issues that are relevant. Also, the quality of the source makes a lot of difference because article published in standard global newspapers or research journals do follow an academic rigor in so far as its language is concerned. They do not generally use words that may look like enigmatic passwords, yet they do use certain technical words assumed to be well understood among its target readers. For example, an excerpt from a history journal may use words like ‘subaltern’ or ‘temporal’ without much explanation. The possibilities can be infinite, but practically speaking, the familiarity of a topic is if not limited, is not unlimited either.
Thus one should try to attempt RCs that draw from a variety of sources and more importantly sources of academic rigor. For this, we bring to the CAT Aspirants of iQuanta group one RC, passages will be daily taken from a source of impeccable quality (mostly research journals, global newspapers and academic books) for 6 days a week. This would take care of the reading-comprehending part.
The second part i.e the option-elimination part is an extension of the first part, coupled with some basic rules and skills. The basic rules are known to most of the students. The problems that students usually face are the lack of detailed explanation regarding elimination of each option. There has to be a satisfactory explanation to justify why an option is eliminated or sometimes why an option is chosen over another. For this, we will provide a comprehensive analysis of each option with the justification for elimination. If taken seriously, this will make a significant difference in the way one approaches a CAT RC.
The overall aim of this last-mile course is not quantity, but quality. We believe 60 RCs on 60 most relevant topics of academic rigor, along with no non-sense explanations for each option is much better than 1000 random RCs picked haphazardly from sub-standard source. Regardless of where one stands, we believe this free course would help boost one’s score.
