Campus Life at VGSoM IIT Kharagpur

When you talk about the campus life at VGSoM, you can’t go without mentioning the IIT Kharagpur campus. Spread across a staggering 2100 acres, the IIT Kharagpur campus is home to not only the Vinod Gupta School of Management but numerous other departments also. So, campus life at VGSoM essentially extends to life at IIT Kharagpur. In terms of infrastructure and facilities, the campus has anything and everything you might need.

A significant aspect of a residential program is the hostels. Here, hostels are referred to as Halls of Residence. Separate halls are allotted to boys and girls. Each hall will have four to five blocks. Generally, rooms are allocated on either a double or triple-sharing basis. If you were allotted to a double sharing room, then you would have a common bathroom with your next-door neighbor, which can only be accessed by the both of you. These bathrooms are cleaned every week. If you were allotted to a triple-sharing room, then there would most probably be three to four washrooms on every floor, which are cleaned every day. When it comes to food, you have a lot of options on campus. First and foremost, there is the common mess. Here, you get different options on different days, with the same repeating every week. The menus are changed once every month or two months. There is also the night canteen, open from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am. Here you get to comfort your stomachs suffering from late-night hunger pangs. Apart from this, there are several other eateries on campus where you can enjoy some delicious Maggi, bread-omelet, ice cream, coffee, tea, soft drinks, biscuits, or other options. Then there are restaurants on campus such as The Heritage, Subway, Café Coffee Day, and The Smart Print. A consensus among students is that the best restaurant on campus would be TFC, though it’s slightly more expensive. If you were a vegetarian, then Billoos Restaurant would be your go-to restaurant.

As mentioned before the campus is really big. Getting to one point from another will take some time, especially if you were walking. Which is why bicycles are a necessity on campus. They are the cheaper, more eco-friendly options. The daily rides, enjoying the greenery, to get to the next place on your schedule can be healing. Less taxing, but costlier options would be totos and rickshaws. Bus facilities are also provided to the academic complex. The academic complex is huge with many buildings. The helipad is another popular destination on campus. The Tech Market on campus is where you can find everything you might need. From pillows and blankets to cords and extensions. Beyond the campus, there are several shops and markets located close by. Tapdi and Amigos are restaurants popular among students.

As a member of IIT Kharagpur, you get to enjoy the various department fests and society events. The Spring Fest, which is the annual socio-cultural festival, and Kshitij, the annual techno-management fest are the highly awaited events of the year. As a part of VGSoM, you will get to be a part of numerous guest lectures, conclaves, and workshops. All this amidst the already hectic academic requirements. The two years will be stressful, but you will not be alone. You will have your ‘department-mates’ and ‘college-mates’ along with you on the same ride.

Unlike most other B-Schools, VGSoM follows a semester system, instead of the usual trimester system. Why is this important? This is important because of what happens after each semester. After every odd semester, that is the first and third semesters, you get a long break of around one month. And after the even semester, the second semester, you get an extended break of three and a half semesters. After the required two-month summer internship, the remaining one-and-a-half is left up to you to decide what you want to do.

Now, if you were someone who wants to make the most of the MBA experience at VGSoM, then you would probably choose to fill those breaks by doing various internships. You get to familiarize yourself with real-world business practices by working with startups or other well-known organizations. If you feel like you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the past semester to rejuvenate yourself, then that’s fine too. That is the unique aspect of VGSoM’s pedagogy. You get a lot of time apart from the academic sessions to focus on developing yourself personally and professionally.

At VGSoM, it is not just through internships that you get to experience real-world business problems firsthand. The 2022 final placement process for the MBA program at VGSoM IIT Kharagpur witnessed the participation of the entire batch of 97 students and their subsequent successful placements. Only 3% of the batch came from a non-engineering background. The key statistical placement highlights were as follows.
